TikTok sensation London Lazerson has created more than 500 videos and gained more than 3 million followers. In this podcast excerpt, he talks with Adam Nugent about how he got his start and why he likes TikTok better than other social media platforms.

AN: Of all the social media platforms that you’ve been involved in, what’s the one that you enjoy the most?

LL: TikTok 100 percent! I learned that Instagram is very unforgiving. I found TikTok, and I started scrolling and consuming, as one does. I saw the authenticity that came from TikTok because everybody’s filming on their phone. They’re filming moments. They’re doing things they can’t do on Instagram because Instagram is very curated. I can scroll on TikTok and feel good about myself. You don’t get that on Instagram.

AN: Some of the wild, crazy stuff you do is specifically with your Tesla, right? Where did that idea come from?

LL: I was looking into Tesla, and I started seeing that Tesla content had a very high view count. No matter where it was, Tesla content was just getting views but the personalities were so boring. I’m like, “I want a Tesla. I have a personality. Let’s collide these worlds and go after it.”

In order to convince my wife, I’m like, “We’re getting a Tesla, and I’m going to make content with it.” The seats don’t stain, so I pour spaghetti, ravioli, red wine all over the seats. And I don’t ever show cleaning it up. I filled the trunk in the front of the car with Froot Loops, milk, Oreos. I filled it with water and threw some fish in there. I went fishing and scuba diving. I got a comment the other day that said, “Your content is mindless,” and I was like, “It is mindless, but sometimes you need that.”

AN: You said that every day you go live for an hour. What are you doing during your live sessions?

LL: Just talking with the fans. We’ll have anywhere between 100 to 200 concurrent people. They’re always asking questions. I’m just interacting with them.

AN:  Let’s go back to the beginning. How did you get involved in this? Where did you get started?

LL: I was at a Major Lazer concert. I was just looking around and was thinking, “I should do videos. I’m kind of funny.” Then this video came to my mind of getting a guy chewing bubble gum, and I just want to film him for like 10 minutes. He never blows a bubble, but the title says World’s Biggest Bubble. I couldn’t find any guy to do it, and then I was like, “Why don’t I just do it?”

So, I literally filmed myself chewing bubblegum for a couple of minutes and got a bunch of different angles and posted it on Facebook. That was my first video ever. It was titled World’s Biggest Bubble. I never blow a bubble—it was just a big troll. Three months later, I’m lying down and my phone is just going off. I’m like, “What what’s going on?”

I had like 6,000 Facebook notifications. All the sudden, that video just exploded. It was stolen by every big meme page because Unilad, which is one of the Facebook’s biggest pages in the world, picked it up. They actually stole it from me, and they didn’t give me any credit. Within the night, had like 5 million views on their page. And then because they were a big meme page, every other meme page on Instagram and Facebook took it. So literally, my first video was my first success.
