Like many of us, it took Jessica time to figure out what her individual purpose was in life. She shares about how she came to the conclusion that her mission is to help others in this episode.
JD: I’ve always known that I’m here to help other people and I loved building teams in my company, but I wanted to take it to the next level. So I first thought my purpose was that I wanted to be a culture coach, like an executive coach, and teach on culture because I was good at that. And I had been helping do that already.
Clients would come to our office, they would love our culture, and they would ask me to come help design their culture. So I really thought that would be my purpose, but it’s kind of changed a little bit now.
It’s not culture coaching. I mean we can talk about culture if you want. But I think my purpose was just helping others. I think I’m really good at holding space for people and creating a safe space. If they need to break down before they break through, then I do that. If they’re ready to go to the next level, whatever the next level is for them. And I work with a lot of executives, right? So it’s not always about business because maybe your personal life needs to be redirected.
KS: 100%. Often.
JD: That’s usually the case. I mean, I say I work with executives but it’s life coaching 99% of the time. So anyway, that’s where I feel like my purpose is. I’m just here to help people go to the next level. And letting go of the how has really been the biggest learning curve for me because I’m a very structured person.
AN: So reversing that—how do you take someone, from a coach’s perspective, someone that’s not structured, someone that’s been more of a free bird, and try to add a little bit more structure to their life? What advice would you give to someone?
JD: Oh, somebody on the opposite side? Well I guess the question would be, “are you getting what you want now?” Because if you are getting what you want, then why change it? Why do you need structure if it’s working and you’re getting what you need?
Now if it’s not working, then obviously you have to redirect that. It’s all about trusting yourself, and setting up structure so that you can trust yourself. I mean that’s what I believe anyway. So I think I would reverse engineer it that way.
