Sometimes what seems like a setback is actually an opportunity in disguise. This is the case for The Buttery Bros, Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers, who, after getting fired from the CrossFit media team started a fitness YouTube channel that has become a great success! Both have a passion for photography and filmmaking that they have now funneled into creating videos that can help anyone along their fitness journey. In this podcast excerpt, they explain how they shifted from creating fitness documentaries to turning the camera on themselves.

AN: When did you guys come from being behind the camera to being on camera? What was that pivotal moment?

HC: We just had so much fun traveling and doing stuff while working at CrossFit. I was filming something for an athlete, and I messaged him afterward and said, “Hey, thanks for promoting the show. The documentary has been super helpful and helped us out.” And he said, “No, thank you. You’re documenting my highlights, and 30 years from now, I can show my kids and my grandkids this video.” In my head I was like, “No, one’s doing that for me. I want to look cool and show my kids stuff down the road.” So I started documenting my own little family vlog. And then when it was like, “Hey, we’re going to Dubai to film a CrossFit thing.” I thought, “Hey, let’s turn the camera on ourselves and go find fun things to do while the competition isn’t going on.” And that became the inception of creating this sort of a travel adventure tourism on top of fitness as well.

One thing we always push is to scale for life. Workouts are often very hard. I run a business. I’m a father of two kids. I’m not getting as much sleep as I need. I’m not paying as much attention to my diet. So, I need to do things that are appropriate for my fitness level. And that translates to the general public. They’re like, “I can’t do what [professional athletes are] doing, but I see what The Buttery Bros are doing. Maybe I do something a little less than they are doing.” We try to make it relatable for the audience.
