Life is full of many chapters, and it’s never too late to start a new one. Not only does this lead to new experiences, sometimes it’s the best thing for the well-being of our minds and bodies. In this podcast excerpt, Caitlin Hansen gets real about leaving her 15-year career as a local television personality after suffering serious health problems.
AN: How much of your identity is tied up in the job that you just left?
CH: There’s this piece of me that lives my life on a public platform, and that’s really fun. I love interviewing people and getting their stories. That’s why I went into journalism. It’s another job just like everyone else works. And a lot of the days, I didn’t want to be there—especially days when I was going through divorce and had to put on a happy face and go on TV when really everything inside me felt like it was dying. I’ve definitely had to slowly let go of the part of me that felt like I was cool or important because I worked in TV, and I’m learning that it doesn’t matter. The last five years have been the most transformative of my whole life. And I can tell people that I did that in the past if they want to know, but I’ve actually been trying to not include that in my, “Who are you and what do you do?” anymore. It feels really good, but it’s definitely been something that I didn’t expect to be so hard to let go of.
