Trigger Warning: Suicide
In this podcast excerpt, Heidi shares how she struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts and how she was able to change her mindset to create habits of happiness.
AN: There might be listeners listening to this podcast today that are having suicidal thoughts and aren’t comfortable sharing them. This
HA: Right. you don’t have to just give up and think, “Oh, I’m just going to be suicidal the rest of my life.” You can change your thinking. It’s very possible. I was able to do it. It takes some work, and you have to be very motivated to not want to be in that place anymore.
For me, it was trying to find good—that was where it started. I just had to find something each day to feel like I could live for. So, I had to do a total mind switch because I was so focused on everything that wasn’t going right in my life that I felt like I couldn’t see the good, but as soon as I challenged myself each day to find something, then all of the sudden, I’m writing lists of 30 things I’m grateful for because I just see so much good. It starts with little steps, but it’s very possible to change.
AN: Earlier we referenced earlier the habits of happiness. Let’s talk about that. What are some of the habits of happiness that you teach?
HA: There are 21 habits, but I have some top habits that I love to talk about. And so probably the top few would be gratitude. How you think about your body and how you take care of your body is another way to be happier. Forgiveness is also huge.
